Frequently Asked Questions

What are the school hours?

Hours for a regular school day are 8:10 AM – 2:25 PM for K–5 and 8:10 AM – 2:30 PM for Middle School. Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to learn, and finished with breakfast by 8:30 AM. On early dismissal days, students are dismissed at 12:45 PM.

How does the bilingual curriculum work?

The model changes as our students grow. K1 is full Spanish immersion. Then in the lower grades, children build a strong foundation in literacy by learning to read and write in their dominant language, while spending the rest of the day in Spanish on Mondays through Wednesdays and English on Thursdays and Fridays. After second grade, children move to a 50/50 model, switching languages each week, and in fifth grade and beyond, language switches with each new unit of study in a class. See our Bilingual Model page to learn more about becoming bilingual at the Hurley.

When does the school year start and end?

The first day of school is usually the Thursday after Labor Day for students in 1st–8th grades, and the following Monday for children entering K1 and K2. The last day of school is in late June; the date often shifts due to snow days and other changes. We try to keep the Hurley calendar up to date, but parents are advised to check the Boston Public School calendar in May to confirm the last day of the school year, or call the Hurley front office at 617-635-8489.
