Getting Involved

Parental involvement is a critical aspect of our school’s success. From volunteering in classrooms and welcoming new families to organizing fundraisers and working with partner organizations, there are many ways to help at the Hurley. Please consider volunteering some of your time to support our school.

There are three different groups for parents to join: School Parent Council, Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School, and the School Site Council.

School Parent Council

All parents and legal guardians of current Hurley students are members of the School Parent Council (SPC, previously known as Padres en Acción) and are invited to attend the monthly meetings, which are held at the school. The SPC has been critical in arranging partnerships with outside organizations for enrichment programing, improving the facilities and raising money for field trips. Through the SPC, parents organize school-wide events throughout the year, such as Movie Night and the Math and Science Fiesta. The Parent Council has several ongoing projects, and if you are interested in helping, please email the committee chair and come to the next meeting. SPC also has an active Google email group.

Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School

Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School (NPHS) is a group of parents and community members who work to raise money for the school through special events and grant writing. NPHS’s signature event is ¡TropiCaliente!, a gala night featuring Latin music, food and dancing. Funds raised through NPHS have helped create the school library, turn a parking lot into a playing field, restore the gymnasium, and have supported many of the great programs students enjoy at the Hurley, including music, art, mentoring, anti-bullying, sports, and tutoring. NPHS also supports professional development for teachers. All interested parents and community parents are welcome to attend NPHS meetings, which are held monthly in the South End.

The School Site Council

Each Boston public school convenes a School Site Council, a governing body responsible for school-based decision-making. It is composed of the principal, six teachers, and six parents. Parent representatives are elected early in the school year, and serve for terms of 1, 2, or 3 years. The site council participates in decisions about approving school rules and, in some cases, hiring teachers.

How To Get Involved

To find the next meeting of the School Parent Council, Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School, or the School Site Council, please check the calendar. Parents may also volunteer during school hours by helping in the library, providing an extra set of hands during lunch hour, or chaperoning a field trip. Please speak with the librarian or the classroom teachers about these opportunities.
